The South African Retirement Reality Report 2020 is based on data from the respected Brand Atlas survey, which measures the lifestyles of the universe of 15.1 million economically active South Africans.

RRR20, 10X Investments’ third annual report, confirms what we already knew about South Africa’s looming retirement crisis: there is a potential tsunami of people nearing retirement with inadequate pensions. Unfortunately, the report also makes it abundantly clear that dangerously few people are aware of it, never mind taking the necessary steps to avoid their own crisis

Key findings include:

49% of respondents don't have a retirement savings plan at all, up from 46% in 2019

There are very low levels of awareness about what is required to fund a decent retirement

A shocking proportion of corporate retirement fund members say they don’t know anything about their fund, and don’t care about it

Very poor knowledge across the board about how much people are paying away in fees

The investment gap between genders is getting worse.

Around three-quarters of people across all income brackets say they will have to somehow generate some income in retirement
